Downtown Austin is a place where worlds collide. Health enthusiasts, executives, athletes, doctors, zen masters, hipsters, lawyers, scenesters, hippies, musicians, artists, cowboys, local celebs, students and punk rockers… all find a way to make the downtown area their own. Locals and out of towners alike may be privy to the plethora of entertainment to be found on 6th street, but beyond the more popular side of 6th street, the stretch between Congress and I35, the surrounding downtown area has even more to offer. You’ll also find the Whole Foods flagship store, a weekly Farmers’ Market, Waterloo Records, the original Alamo Drafthouse and Book People. Just south of the University of Texas and home to the Texas Capitol the area attracts residents including students, lawmakers, business owners, empty nesters and anyone wanting to stay near all the activity downtown Austin has to offer. Downtown Austin is also full of state and local landmarks such as the Paramount Theater and the 10 mile hike and bike trail at Lady Bird Lake. Single-family homes, lofts and condos are all available, though in most cases at a higher price than surrounding areas due to the ever growing popularity of the location. Plans for both private and public development in central Austin continue with an emphasis on sustainability as well as economic and cultural vibrancy, all while preserving and enhancing Austin’s unique history. Transportation initiatives, park expansion, and incentives for mixed-use developments are all part of the 10 year plan.
